Where to look for housing?

Furnished apartments or homes

Some landlords offer renting furnished apartments or houses. Most landlords use real estate agencies or online property platforms, such as , ,  or .

When browsing listings, keep in mind that the rent prices often do not include utility costs such as electricity, gas, water and internet or, when it's an apartement, shared costs. Make sure to check the total rental price before signing the lease.

Studios

A studio is a self-contained accommodation with a private kitchen and bathroom. Studios are popular among international visitors who wish to live independently.

Shared housing (more suitable for individuals)

Sharing a house or apartment with other tenants can be a more affordable option, but makes things a bit more complicated as well. When living in shared housing, you will have your own private bedroom, but shared common spaces such as kitchen and living room.

Understanding rental costs

When planning your budget, remember that monthly rent is only part of the overall cost.

Additional expenses may include:

  • electricity
  • gas and heating
  • water
  • internet and television
  • fire insurance
  • municipal taxes
  • moving and furnishing costs

Many rental properties may require a rental guarantee (deposit) of maximum 2 months' worth of rent before moving in.

Moving with a family to Antwerp

If you're moving with a family, housing decisions often go beyond the property itself. Make sure you check the surroudings or the area of the property you're interested in renting.

You may want to consider:

  • proximity to schools or international schools
  • childcare facilities
  • parks and recreational areas
  • public transport connections (De Lijn)
  • Healthcare services
  • Commuting time to your working place

Rental contracts and legislation

Make sure you're aware of the rental legislation in Belgium before you sign any contracts. To protect yourself from rental scams:

  • never transfer money before verifying the accommodation
  • be cautious: when it seems too good to be true, it might as well be
  • avoid landlords who refuse to arrange a (digital) viewing
  • make sure you receive a written rental agreement
  • verify the identity of the landlord or agency whenever possible

If you have doubts about a housing offer, seek advice before making any payment.
