Subject: How do body and craniofacial shape vary among different species of Lake Malawi cichlids?

Lake Malawi cichlids are a classic example of adaptive radiation, with species displaying a wide array of body shapes and craniofacial morphologies that may reflect differences in habitat use and feeding strategies. This project explores this variation using 2D landmark-based geometric morphometrics. The student will digitize anatomical landmarks and shape outlines on fish images and compare body and craniofacial shapes among species and trophic guilds. The aim is to identify patterns of shape variation and examine how these relate to feeding ecology.
