Expertise

My research is focussed on developing and applying X-ray powder diffraction as a mobile chemical imaging tool. I mainly apply this technique for the non-invasive analysis of paintings, art objects and their degradation products. Next to this mobile instrument, I employ synchrotron-based radiation for the investigation of complex art/paint stratigraphies at the submicron scale.

Development and systemactic application of non-invasive spectroscopic imaging tools for technical art history and conservation of painted artworks (MACRO-IMAGING). 01/04/2020 - 31/03/2030

Abstract

The purpose of this project is the development and systematic application of non-invasive spectroscopic imaging tools for technical art history and conservation of painted artworks. As method of choice, macroscopic X-ray fluorescence will be employed, but also other methods. The imaging capabilities will be mostly used on works by Flemish artists present in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna.
