People-oriented green space indicators and neighbourhood typologies: empirical validation using survey data in Flanders. 01/10/2026 - 30/09/2027

Abstract

Green space contributes to healthy and climate-resilient living environments. However, many commonly used spatial indicators only partially reflect how residents can actually see, access and use green space in their residential environment. This research therefore developed indicators that describe different characteristics of green space from the perspective of residents, including the presence, functional accessibility and visibility of green space, as well as the relationship between accessible green space and the number of potential users. Based on these indicators, data-driven neighbourhood typologies were developed for Flanders using latent class analysis. Residential environments are grouped according to combinations of green space characteristics rather than predefined administrative or morphological categories. What remains insufficiently understood is the extent to which these spatial indicators and neighbourhood typologies correspond to how residents themselves experience and use their green living environment. The final phase of the research therefore focuses on their empirical validation and interpretation via survey data.
