Zoe Moores is a researcher, lecturer, and (live) subtitler. Her research is centred on translation, accessibility, and inclusion, and at the heart of her work is the question of how translation and access can be used as tools for social change. Central to this is the exploration of how considerations related to access can be introduced as early as possible in any process. Zoe's recent projects have included how respeaking, a technique for creating live subtitles, can be used to make live events more accessible, interlingual respeaking through the SMART Project at Surrey, Action Translate at Warwick, which was concerned with the project management of translation projects in NGOs, and an investigation into the accessibility of accessibility tools. Developing resources for training (both students and access professionals) featured strongly in these projects. Her current work, at the University of Antwerp, is concerned with advancing media accessibility. A key aspect of this work is exploring subtitle personalisation, and how generative AI can be used ethically to support this, whilst respecting diverse user needs and the work of professional subtitlers in the industry. With extensive experience working as an access professional (subtitling, live subtitling and some audio description) herself, Zoe also brings a knowledge and understanding of industry practices and the close connections she has built with audiences into her work.
