International justice in the current global political context by Luc Walleyn

The lecture will address the importance and the current state of international law. The world today is facing multiple global crises, and daily events do not cease to surprise and even shock us. Wherever we are or travel to, the same events influence our lives, but to different degrees. As law students and as lawyers, we sometimes wonder what our role is and, more broadly, what the role of law is. This lecture will focus on international law and international justice. It will consider why the combination of law and politics does not always lead to justice.

Luc Walleyn is a Belgian lawyer specialised in international law and human rights. He worked for Lawyers without Borders in Rwanda, Burundi and Kosovo, and later became that organisation’s president. He also served as a member on the boards of directors of Damocles, an international network against impunity, and Reporters sans Frontières and of Médecins du Monde. He helped shape international law, both through his tireless lobbying for policy and legislation in Belgium, and as a lawyer bringing war criminals to justice. He represented victims at the International Criminal Court and was an executive council member of the International Criminal Court Bar Association. In his book Law without borders, he describes his work and the atrocities the world has faced, and continues to face, which make international law so relevant.
