Cities and Urbanisation: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Cities and urbanisation are increasingly identified as both the cause and remedy of todays major problems such as climate change, social inequality, and political conflict. The field of Urban Studies is gaining importance in the academic world and beyond as its interdisciplinary approach is key in both understanding and tackling current complex urban challenges. The minor programme "Cities and Urbanisation: Interdisciplinary Perspectives" is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of key concepts, approaches, and debates in the field of urban studies. Through a range of courses, students will explore various disciplines and perspectives to gain insight into the multidimensionality of cities and urbanisation processes.

Overall, this minor programme encourages students to critically reflect upon and discuss urban problems and potential solutions. By adopting an interdisciplinary perspective and considering various viewpoints, students develop a well-rounded understanding of cities and are better equipped to address the complex challenges of urbanization.

Heritage

Students enrolled in the Heritage Minor gain a solid foundation in heritage studies and develop the analytical, methodological, and critical thinking skills required to understand the role of heritage in contemporary societies.

Heritage expertise is increasingly relevant across sectors that require professionals capable of navigating cultural diversity, digital transformation, social change, and complex societal challenges. The minor strengthens students' ability to analyse issues from multiple perspectives, manage and interpret information, understand relationships between culture, people and technologies, and engage critically with contemporary debates. These competences complement a wide range of academic backgrounds and enhance students' capacity to address real-world challenges.

The programme broadens students' academic profile and supports both personal and professional development by fostering critical reflection, intercultural awareness, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and intellectual curiosity. Graduates can apply these competences in fields such as cultural heritage institutions, museums, archives, libraries, public administration, international organisations, NGOs, consultancy, cultural and creative industries, communication, and education.

For students interested in further study, the minor provides an excellent foundation for advanced programmes in heritage studies, digital humanities, cultural studies, anthropology, communication studies, sociology, public history, museum studies, and other interdisciplinary fields. It also offers valuable preparation for research-oriented pathways that examine the relationships between heritage, culture, technology, and society.
